It is good news for the seas and beaches to see that beach clean-ups are becoming more and more fashionable and that more and more volunteers are doing it on a regular basis.
What do beach clean-ups consist of?
Individually or promoted by organisations committed to the environment such as Alongside.eco, beach clean-ups consist of walking along the beach and collecting all waste that does not belong to nature, such as packaging, microplastics, fishing nets, ear sticks, etc., with the aim of leaving the beaches clean so that this waste does not end up at the bottom of the sea.
Beach clean-ups have a history!
If beach cleanups are a seemingly recent initiative, it is an activity that has decades of history. Since 1986, World Beach Cleanup Day has been celebrated on 21 September, although it is usually held on the third Saturday of September where beach cleanups are organised on thousands of beaches in more than 123 countries. It is estimated that in recent years more than 12 million volunteers worldwide have participated in International Beach Cleanup Day.
